I don't know what dojo you've been to but my friends here in Kumagaya do akido, Kendo and Kyudo (dude, dude and girl respectively) and they once pointed out to me that it was highly illegal to hit a student that way. We were in my living room watching Gundam Build FIghters, being the GaIjIn I am (I'm a foReigner) I asked If training in japan, they went through such things like one of the protagonists. They quickly told me no that it was only in anime to give it drama, then they laughed and asked me what society did I think japanese had... barbarians?
