Residental weaponsmith on a different site, and fan of weapons here.
do flintlocks even use gun powder?? *facepalm* cuz I said mine did. I don't know
Flintlocks, yes, they do use gunpowder, in the method of pouring the powder down the muzzle of the barrel, followed by the lead ball, and finally being pushed down with a rod. Then a percussion cap to act as the primer is set, and you pull back the hammer. You probably can guess the rest.
I was thinking of my character having duel pistols, but since you said you're looking for black powder firearms, would black powder revolvers be okay? Or are we sticking to flintlock style weapons?
There are revolver style guns(my character has them as well), but they are loaded with paper cartridges. Search up Chassepot rifle as a popular example of a weapon that fires paper rounds. However, some important things to note about paper rounds. First, you have to make each one separately, and by hand. If your character doesnt have the patience, get them to associate with someone who is patient~ second, maintenance parts for revolvers is harder to come by than single shot guns, and are also less durable than single shots, due to the amount of moving components. And third, paper rounds, the paper itself is consumed, but leaves burnt residue and fouls the gun barrel after several rounds, making accuracy worse, or even impossible to aim far. Also, side note, 5-6 round chamber for revolvers.
This is really interesting, I didn't even know there was another kind of gunpowder. Also:
Black powder, hell as powerful. Compare the normal fireworks with an illegal black powder firework. Now blow them both up. Have fun~
