Or rather, he was given the task. Now, he no longer works in the employ of the Visipian Government. In fact, he's being actively hunted by them. 

But maybe he could still wish to retrieve those goggles. Marga could attempt to strike a deal with him. For instance, there's something that she suspects is onboard the Lone Star and if he helps her to get it, she'll let him have the goggles. Of course, she'll go back on her word though, which will likely be hilarious :D
