Plague of the North

The Northern Lands are harsh and unforgiving at the best of times,
but now an evil seeps down from the uncharted lands threatening to engulf all that stand in its way.
The evil of which I speak? The Black Blood Plague.
It corrupts the minds of men and women, adults and children,
dogs and beasts, and turns them into mindless cannibals.
It is up to you to investigate this scourge,
and bring an end to it before it takes everyone you love.

Genre:
High fantasy mixed with zombies.

The Setting:
This RP is set in the fictional fantasy world of ‘Spirabilis’. Set in it’s Northern Lands (as it is referred to in the South), the Celtobar Peninsular has become a rallying point for the Kingdom of Vaseli and refugees from the various tribes along its Northern borders. The threat is a magical plague that is quickly moving south and has been called ‘The Black Blood’ because of the physical effect is has on its victims. Those that are infected become highly aggressive, mindless, cannibalistic, and their blood thickens and turns black. So far there has been no cure, but priests seem to be confident that this is the result of dark magic, not nature. The only hope it would seem, would be to find the source and destroy it. Unfortunately the lands to the far North are inhospitable and full of dark creatures, and even the tribes try to stay as southward as they can.

Now the main cities of Vaseli are becoming full of hatred, as refugees clog the streets and increase the chance of the plague breaching the walls. Without the farms being worked, food stores are also declining at a fast rate. This has only deepened existing resentment however, for the Kingdom has fought the tribes for centuries and there is no shortage of bad blood. Even those wanting to flee south are finding it hard, for across the channel is the Kingdom of Dawn, who are currently at war with the Kingdom of Vaseli; any ships attempting to cross have been sought out and either sunk or burned.

Desperate, King Barius of House Vaseli has withdrawn his troops from the North and has doubled his effort to take the White Coast and expand into the territory of Dawn. But he knows that this is not enough, and now he has trusted generals and advisors in each city to draw together teams of investigators to uncover the truth behind the plague. These investigators, known as the Consano, are being told to meet at a town named The Cross Roads. Here there is also an opportunity for others to join the group, but only if Sir Chester and Lady Buxton think they are worthy.

Some Handy Key Points (maybe):
  • There is magic, but it's uncommon
  • The plague has no cure
  • Characters must bring something to the team, but that doesn't mean I want them to be OP
  • Knights are very rare
  • Travelling is, unfortunately, a thing in this RP
  • Technology and culture wise, this is much like the middle ages
  • No guns or even gunpowder

Magic:
Magic is relatively rare in the Northern Lands, with only around 1 or 2 people in every 100 being born with gifted blood. As a rule, it is more likely to inherit magic from ones bloodline but is not always the case. A mage could have a child with no magical ability, whereas a ‘normal person’ could have a child that is a mage. A lot is still not known about magic, but it is widely accepted that magic was once far more prominent. It’s said that in ancient times there were cities far greater than the ones standing today, but that powerful mages led the world into destruction and ruin before they were almost wiped out. Indeed, even now people are suspicious of magic and have every right to be; there are always cases and stories of mages doing evil things behind closed doors.

Those with gifted blood might not ever know that they are a mage, as their powers are not easily manifested and controlled. Many only find out by accident, often because they are put in a life or death situation when they first use magic. Others might learn from parents, or come across tomes or artefacts that teach them spells. Once a mage realises their power they may be able to train and master simple energy manifestations (energy bolts) or telekinesis. Other than this, unless a mage is taught or finds tomes or artefacts, it will require years of concentration and practice before they are able to perform a wider range of spells. That said, the learning curve tends to gain momentum as the mage learns more; meaning the more powerful a mage is, the more likely they are to learn more. This tends to results in mages being either fairly harmless or very dangerous, with few in-between.

Mainstream Religion:
The Old Pantheon
This is perhaps the oldest living religion in the known world. Followers of the Pantheon tend to believe in codes of honour and strength, amongst other old beliefs and traditions. It comprises of six gods in three marriages. These are as follows:
  • Lord Ruo, God of Earth, and Lady Shia, God of Wind
  • Lord Kai, God of Fire, and Lady Wae, God of Water
  • Lord Dorn, God of Darkness, and Lady Sol, God of Light

None of these deities are considered to be good or evil in themselves, and they are all believed to have come together to create life. Therefore they are all equal, although typically families will only really pray to one or two patron gods.

Priests of the Old Pantheon say that magic should not be feared, but rather accepted, and so will often take in those born with abilities and train them to be healers. Despite this many are still suspicious when they see magic, and there have been many events that give them reason to be.

The Church of Light
The Church of Light is a relatively new religion (at least where the Northern Lands are concerned), but seems to be spreading quickly. It believes that there is only one true God, the God of Light, and that all others are demons or shams. Its followers are taught by priests to be hostile towards believers in other religions, although obviously not all adopt such fanatic views. Followers of this religion have a particular disliking of Lady Sol, and call her ‘The Great Imposter’. There have been incidents recently where fanatics have desecrated temples of Sol and committed brutal crimes against her followers. As such this has given rise to some tension amongst communities.

Still open and yet to start! The OOC is mostly discussion about the lore; the results of which have been incorporated into the wiki (second post in the OOC).

(In other words, you don't need to read through the entire OOC before joining)
