"Personal Arc": Shiori grew up in Sapporo, where she was the star basketball player at Sapporo-Kita High School. However, she moved down to Tokyo to support her older brother's baseball career, as well as transfer into a more prestigious school to try and better attract the attention of American scouts who might take her to America. However, she abandoned all of her friends and teammates in the move, and the chilly reception in Tokyo has shaken her confidence in her abilities and has her wondering if she's screwed up her life to chase what may amount to a pipe dream.

Mamushi is an angry young man. With a poisonous homelife and a disrespect of authority, he doesn't act so much as he reacts badly. Not one to push, he pushes back twice as hard, which gets him into plenty of trouble and has lead him to be accustomed to a confrontational lifestyle. Passive aggressive--and occasionally downright aggressive--his demeanor is as mercurial as his mood. A perfectionist and a moral individual at heart, his inability to hold himself to impossible goals in the face of others unable to uphold theirs, he lashes out because he can't understand how people can simply accept the world for what it is. He certainly can't accept his.

Stuck in a situation beyond his control, the true problem is that he cares, and so deeply--he has very definite views of how things should be but is so frequently confronted by his own powerlessness in the face of the disappointments in his life that he can't help but rage. Ill tempered and acidic, he is nevertheless a stalwart friend to those few who can stomach him and a defender of those who need it but have nowhere else to turn, albeit grudgingly.

A creature of overwhelming strength and tectonic might, its beastial appearance says much about Mamushi's ability to surrender himself to his baser instincts and give in to rage in the face of an uncaring world. Devouring its enemies whole or crushing them with its sheer bulk and might, its power is tectonic and icy, a torrent that sweeps even the mightiest away.

Personal Arc: The son of an impotent, alcoholic father and a bitter corporate mother long disgusted with her need to support her failing household, Mamushi's personal life is vitriolic and depressing. Full of situational givens he is unable to control that he yet allows to control him, his failings are those he places upon himself--his inability to reconcile his mother and father, his inability to keep himself stable and successful in such an environment and above all else his inability to hold his family together for the sake of his younger sister, for whom his parents constant bitterness may yet prove to be a defining unpleasantness in her life. Without the ability to accept that such is the way of life and not his fault, he sees only his failure to be strong enough to make it all alright instead of his ability to accept that the burden should never have been his.
