War. War never changes.
Since the first tribal Neanderthals decided to gather together and attack a neighboring tribe, humanity has been plagued by it. It has lead to the rise and fall of civilizations, and the death of billions.
The toll it takes isn't just borne by those who wage war, but by all involved. The dead leave behind widows and orphans, loved ones who must mourn the loss of their family and friends as they defend themselves against the ones who caused their mourning.
The landscape is covered in ruins, the remains of once great cities and towns, laid waste by man's insatiable desire to take what belongs to their neighbor.
As one who was once a part of a great civilization, you stand witness to this destruction. Hidden underground in a mighty bunker, you were protected as the bombs fell, only to awaken years later to witness the ruin it caused. You are the latest in that line of widows, orphans, family and friends, because war, war never changes.
We were born before the war, making it into the vault in time to sleep through the fallout underground, in a simulation in which we had no needs. Pain was felt as discomfort, death and illness were practically non-existent, and needs were filled by the computer whenever they arose. For two hundred years we lay in cryo-stasis, with our aging and our perception of time slowed to 1/40th of normal.
After experiencing five years of this paradise, however, we were awoken by a group calling itself the Enclave. They are what remains of the US government, and need our help to restore humanity to what it once was, a thriving society where technology could give everyone a small measure of the paradise we just experienced. With our help, that of the past society, the Enclave will rebuild. They will bring food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, and medicine to the sick.
At least, that's their promise.
Set in Georgia, we will come from Vault 47, south of Atlanta, and will be forced to deal with the horrors of the waste. In an instant we will have went from a land of plenty, without suffering, to a land where suffering is a part of life, where is is a necessary cost for survival.
Groups in the area include the Enclave, which control Atlanta and some of its suburbs, the Purity Brotherhood, an offshoot of the KKK who run the coast with a rigid caste system based on race, and the Swamp Tribes to the south.
