The Vault unifies to fight the monsters but loses. Characters escape but since the monsters are not as distracted by Security Forces, they follow the characters and kill a few. 

So if you think about it, the revolution helped distract the monsters so that our characters could escape!

Although, much more brutal fights have transpired in the past with jack and a few other Vault Citizens, so it's curious as to why this happened this specific time, and not other times.
