Well, I am going off of the muzzle velocity of a modern rifle. I pulled the FAL as a baseline, and then I read this article: http://www.wired.com/2012/05/star-wars-blaster-speed/

of which the pertinent conclusion is: "...the ground base’s blaster shots. The average for these things is just 34.9 m/s (78 mph)". The muzzle velocity of an FAL shooting a median loaded round is somewhere around 830 meters per second, so 830/35= 23.71. 

Predictions for future developments in firearms technology diverge on cartridge size and therefore muzzle velocity: there are predictions for much smaller, much faster rounds and larger, somewhat slower rounds. Star Wars would most likely have both varieties, or none, who knows [it is a past-future space-fantasy wonderland], but I figure current technology at least would be available.

Slugthrowers are pretty rubbish against armor [according to the wiki. I personally am skeptical but canon is canon] but force users tend not to use armor, and a bullet [especially a futuristic one] will fuck soft tissue's day up. I figure it would be super in flavor for a /k/ommando to have, seeing as it would play right into the common channer adoration of older firearms and the love to enthuse about corner-case weapons.

Regardless, I don't think I'll be swapping characters. If nothing else it would be too much work to redo a character sheet.
