Here's to the non proofread, unfinished and in the last bit completely uncreative info...
The Runic line of magic is one that demands the absolute best of those that practice it. Even a slight error on a rune could cause certain death for the one who created it, or someone who fails to understand every implication of a Runeword could find themselves in much deeper trouble than they had bargained for. This unreliability, combined with the as many have called ridiculously steep learning curve, have made it a less used form of magic. However, before the time of the Primus, it was considered the absolute strongest. A master of Runic magic was considered a master of all magic; one who could draw runes correctly and draw upon the right sources of power could create anything from a fireball to a nigh indestructible fortress.

This all changed when the time of the Primus did come.

The Primus did not just have raw power at his disposal, the raw power to force through many barriors that all forms of magic other than runic faced; he was gifted with a mind capable of discovering exactly what people were doing wrong. Through his teachings, other schools of magic became optimized. Powerful. Old runes, long streamlined against resistance, fell easily to perfected magic of other sorts.

Ultimately, not only did other forms of magic match Runic in power, they became more easily learned and simply easier to do.

It was a complete pain in the ass to make a house out of Runes, let alone anything big. By contrast, one who can manipulate the elements could forge a tightly packed dirt house in a small fraction of the time. Fireballs that required their creator to draw runes for them, which would eventually need to be redrawn, could be cast tenfold by comparison. Telepathy could be learned and exercised from a single mind, not requiring a long, tedious ritual that could break the mind of the summoner if done incorrectly. Summoning demons no longer required five long runewords for the spell to even work, and ten more to bind them, and even more to make them loyal.

Only the greatest of Runic mages could compete with these advancements, and the sheer number of opponents they faced from the Primus's enlightening caused them to fall easily to the raw power their enemies held. The near monopoly of magic was shattered. Only one line of Runic mages stood… and the leader of this line fell to the power of the Primus. The old fortress that the leader had was shattered, runes that had held for many centuries… simply crushed by fresh raw power.

With the fall of the Runic mages, the entire line of Runic magic fell into complete obscurity. It became as useful as the modern world learning Latin - useful for a few purposes but with no place in typical society and with even fewer who actually know what they were doing. It is only now that one mage has returned; the son of the one who was considered the strongest mage of his time before the Primus defeated him.
(I do hope this is Ok, but the runes that I intend to use will be based off of (ok, completely ripped off of) the game Diablo 2. Runewords will be made up based on the properties of the runes).
