Your Fate in Our Hands

How To Play Fate

The first step in playing fate is bringing together a group of people. I posted the link to the interest check on the chat after having a lot of people talk about a music battle school, so that's just barely scratching the surface of what we can do.

@SouffleGirl123
@Vesuvius00
@Leolycan

You three havn't played FATE Core to my knowledge so here's what we have to do as a group.

We are going to create our characters together and figure out what we want out of the setting as well as each others.

FIRST we need the High Concept of our characters. A High Concept is a one or two sentence statement that can sum up the character. Generally you can write one by answering this question, "what kind of character do I want to play?"

Example: "I wanna play an ace student who kills with a Triangle, literally." That's a high concept that anyone can take.

Now after a High Concept is the trouble. This is the flaw of a character.

Answer this, "What's wrong with this character?"

Keep in mind that a trouble isn't something they just solve with an hour of their time. A Trouble causes trouble which means that it can lead to drama. If your character has an issue with someone from their past, a trait of their personality that no one can stand, an addiction, etc. A trouble doesn't need to be crippling such as disability or inability to use an important skill.

Example: "No Rhythm." which in this rp could mean death.. depending on the school curriculum or could mean a setback in passing with high grades.

What the High Concept and Trouble are called is character Aspects. An Aspect is a short phrase describing something of a person, place, or thing. Once both HC and Trouble are written we can get to the next part.

Any questions?

Not really. If accepted (and as per mechanics)

HC:

Strong vocal singer, able to preform almost any action (I.E: Heal, Attack, Defend, etc.) based on the type of song sung and the emotion behind it.

Trouble:

Part of a song's power is the words used to convey it's message. As such, the character has a problem coming up with lyrics on short notice.

SO "Strong Vocal Singer" is your HC and uh... "Not creative and inarticulate" is your trouble? I can see how those are gunna work in a music battle school and I think we're gunna have an awesome time with this coming character.

I also just subscribed to the thread because haha why didn't I in the first place.

I'd list the problem as 'Not spontaneously creative.' It implies that if he's just caught without any prior preparation, he's at a significant disadvantage. He can draft up a song if given time, but put him on the spot and he struggles (I.E: If he were to go against a hip-hop vocalist in an impromptu battle, it'll be rather lopsided)

This makes a lot more sense. Since spontaneous battles are gunna be an issue for the character that gives me an idea. Students challenge each other to music competitions, the loser backs down, gets killed, or somewhere in between.

:o I bet the student council acts like a panel of judges during challenges, so they can end the competition before things get out of hand... or someone loses a hand.

If accepted;

Guitarist; Bass, electric and acoustic.

HC: Strong attack (electric) and strong healing (acoustic), good (yet not strong) defence (Bass)

Trouble: As well as the fact changing instruments takes time the guitarist is deaf in their left ear which could lead to timing issues at times

So "Guitarist of all types" is something you wanna play?

Then the trouble "Deaf in one Ear" certainly a physical trouble that will be a problem in the rp!

Seeing "heal" now for a second time I think this is an important note.

The actions in Fate are a lot different than with most fighting systems like D&D.

With Fate, characters take "damage" in combat but in things like an obstacle course damage might be failing to clear an obstacle course and getting less time to complete the rest.

So Healing itself isn't part of the Fate system till we define what it heals. Since Music Battle School is about fighting each other with music damage can be physical, Mental, or make the Collaboration of a Band disintegrate like striking down a deck of stacked cards.

Healing can describe trying to synchronize with other players in a band after they just fucked up the chorus, or literally healing a wound via.... magic?

How would you want healing to work?

Mind over matter personified? The music strikes a mental cord that makes the listener feel relieved of whatever ailes the, so the power of the music is so strong it makes it true?

So it lowers their mental stress? I can see that one working out very well. Mental Stress is a form of damage in Fate. Any other forms of healing?

Hate to get all Morpheous on ya, but 'Your mind makes it real.' Example, @SouffleGirl123 plays a rift that gashes someone's arm up pretty badly. As such, I sing, and said person begins to forget their pains. So the wound starts closing because the body no longer thinks it is injured.

ooh so there is a bit of mental magic in this. :) if your mind thinks it's real, then it is real.

Yep. Which I'd the music can even affect the physical plane is because the artist believes it will/can.

You can tell I haven't given this kinda of narrative any prior thought before >.>

Great idea @Leolycan

It would be awesome if out third person was online and contributing to this, but Im glad that the majority is agreeing on how things work.

Uh, ok so do you both feel comforatble with your HC and Trouble?

GOOD. WE can move onto the next part until Ves gets back.

Both of you need to tell me about your first time using your instruments in battle. Who did you fight? How did the fight go? Did anything happen that you didn't expect? What we are going to do with this "first adventure" is look for other character aspects that are not your HC or Trouble but are similar in the way you describe your character.

Answer those questions then we can see if we can get any aspects out of them. Don't be afraid to go a little crazy with your skills even through it would be your first time using your instrument in a face off against another person. WOrld build, add things that we havn't thought of yet like an arena, panel of judges, traps and more! If you're stuck for an idea then think of the first episode of your favorite action series or anime. What struggles did that character face and how did he overcome those struggles?

@SiliconColt I'm here, I just didn't get any notification from the mention in the OP post for some reason...

I'm ok with everything discussed so far, here's my character:

Plays the Flute and Piccolo

HC: Can create structures and creatures with sound and control them with the melody from the instrument, when playing the Piccolo the structures and creatures are stronger because of the higher pitch of the tone.

Trouble: Has asthma/other breathing problems so is bad at athletics and can't play for extremely long amounts of time. Structures and creatures break or disappear when they stop playing.

uh HC: sum it down to a phrase or sentence. I see you have specific powers but that's not really describing the character. Maybe "Green Lantern x Piccolo/Flue Player" would describe the character as an aspect.

Trouble doesn't need to incorporate the power. But "Has Asthma" seems all that you need for a trouble.

With HC and other aspects in general its not about describing a power or ability but instead a title, reputation, or obligation which defines very little as opposed to giving a vague idea of who a character is instead. What the character can do is best described with skills which we'll get to after the Origin story where people give their character first "adventure" which in this case is their first battle/competition.

HC: Able to summon creatures and structures with her instrument that are controlled by melody and pitch?

Trouble: Creations fade due to her lack of playing when suffering from Asthma attacks?

"

That only describes a power and a powers limitation. There needs to be more character in their over ability.

@SiliconColt Sorry to point this out, but what's the difference between what I said and what @Leolycan and @SouffleGirl123 said?

It just seems like you're picking on me a little is all.

HC: An energetic Flutist who can create and control structures and creatures with her instrument.

Trouble: She has a lack of patience and also has asthma.
