It looks like the two people that I was supposed to go up against have yet to show.

Now that the Third Labour judging is over, I'm going to buckle down and finish those arenas like I promised.

Six new battlegrounds, coming right up. Expect them tomorrow.

Looking forward to some cool new locations. Oddly we never did get interesting locations like fighting atop a train or blimp. :K

The thing about Arenas is that they shouldn't be too much of a focal point most of the time. That's why most are single. It's a bit much to fight an opponent and have to deal with an arena trying to kill you.

Some are fun though, but in terms of ranked matches, I'd avoid them.

Well, all of my Arenas do have rule Variants intended to reduce the impact of the environment in order for the fighters to have more of a conventional slugging match. That said, basically all of them have properties and features which, when not hazardous to the fighters, nonetheless impact the battle in a significant fashion.

So yeah, if you want your safe, boring, featureless but functional battleground - just use The Fighting Fields. It has invisible and indestructible boundaries, undynamic terrain, and is completely uninteresting in any way shape or form. There is no reason to use any other arena if you think the facets of the arena itself shouldn't be important factors in a fight.

All Fox, no items, final destination.

That said, one of the acmes of skill is not only being able to defeat the opponent - but being able to defeat them anywhere, under any circumstances, under any condition. If a character is concerned that they'd have too much to worry about in more sophisticated arenas, or that it would be too risky - perhaps they should consider a different line of work.

Because, if I did, you would probably take over and we all saw how the MV went when you and whatshisface took over when my method wasn't preferred. I believe there was a power issue, then it died. ;P

@Terminal In general, it shouldn't be. Like I wouldn't use Tilting Building from Dead Fantasy in a ranked fight. I find that having a battlefield that you also have to deal with, such as say the Building, wouldn't be conducive to an important fight. The battleground can be dynamic without basically being an NPC, that you also have to fight. I don't mind or discourage the creation of them(perhaps the seeming need for them to be 'approved', but thats another discussion).

It works in wrestling, however.

All fights are now to be held inside a steel cage.

DIS SUMMER. HELL. IN. A . CELL.

Joking aside, the environment should play a big factor in how clever an opponent is. That is, it takes some skill to utilize all of the environment; whether that means kicking up dust, fighting so that your opponent has to go uphill to reach you, or making it so that the sun is in his eyes and not yours.

Exactly.

I don't know what the Tilt Building is (I presume it's a building that flips over or something), but none of my arenas have any 'fuck you and die' features (with the possible exception of the Recursive Gameboard, but that has rule variants to eliminate the offending element). A reasonably alert combatant should be able to navigate and fight in all of them without fear. A few of them have stationary and clearly marked hazards (Onslaught Station has traps), and few others have puzzle-base obstacles (the Clockwork Fairground). All intended to add a tactical, psychological element to the fight. The clever opponent will have an advantage, so long as they aren't too clever by half. No feature by itself is hazardous - it is the enemy combatant exploiting those features that will create danger.

There is a difference between kicking sand, and say the building, which goes from horizontal to vertical, forcing you to run down it, fight, and avoid the pillars that pop up.

And this wasn't aimed at anyone, arena ideas tend to pop up that serve more to make the people fight against the Arena, than the opponent. Honestly, I have no real idea what Terminal's Arena's have going for them, haven't seen them(as they aren't posted).

I agree with Rilla, an arena setting should never become a hinderance. It should offer a relatively even space that can be expolited once, maybe twice but always as a complementary effect to the fight. Have to see what is offered before any further discussion can be made.

I don't think you have a very good grasp of what tournament play is, which I saw as an earlier problem in your lack of activity with Arena Fighting. If you look at any form of tournament in any game any 'gimmicky' map is almost always banned, Smash Tourneys for example ban all the stages with unfair terrain etc, Total War they fight on flat maps, the point is that only the skill of the fighters becomes a factor, not the Arena giving someone an advantage.

Though there is a very thin line where you can create an Arena where both characters have a fair chance to exploit something, adding an extra and useful dynamic to a fight, it can very easily become an unfair advantage which skews tournament play. Not saying you won't produce something great, but it is a potential issue and the reason why as you say, we fight on 'boring' maps.
