Third episode down . . .
I don't know what this show wants to be. They won't show blood but they want to make it gory. They want interesting characters but only have schoolgirls as the cast. I don't know, since the death of Mami (Nami? Nani? Mani?) didn't actually hit me that hard since they didn't bother showing anything. I'd compare this to Kaji's death in NGE, as you juxtapose Kaji's casual "Yo," against the loud, booming sound of a gunshot and the instant blackout, leaving the viewer shocked and surprised. His last words are on an automated message and written fantastically, as well as Misato's reaction being, well, real. This on the other hand just censors most of the death and you can't see what the character's are really thinking until it's far too long after the death that the effect has worn off and even then, they're not that convincing. There was no tension in either of the fights, to me at least. There really wasn't that much development to make the death that shocking, but it has changed the pace to what has been a very, very, slow-paced beginning.
