Shadowpaw
Hunt around the roots? Why did Stonepaw always get the cool hunting spots? This wasn't fair! Shadowpaw had always wanted to catch a snake and bring it back to the fresh kill pile. He had always wondered what snake tasted like. Maybe he would get lucky and there would be one by the tree. Then again, they had all those scales. How do you get scales off a snake anyway? Shadowpaw shook his head. It wasn't a good item to get lost in thought. He lifted his head up and scanned the boughs of the tree. There were no predators that he could see, but it was probably a good idea to keep an eye and an ear out for them. He hoped Stonepaw was being just as careful. Snakes were just as dangerous as giant birds. It was hunting time. Shadowpaw crouched down and slunk across the grass toward the tree. He was going to catch something good for his mom. A plump vole or a nice mouse. He sniffed around and caught the scent of a mouse. He was downwind, but the mouse had seen him and scurried into its burrow. Shadowpaw wasn't about to give up. He circled around the tree and looked around. Another mouse had popped its head up. It was his. His coat and fur length didnt really assist with his hunting, but it didnt matter. He was determined. He snuck closer, trying to make as little noise as possible. A twig snap, the mouse ran off. He looked at his paws, it hadn't been him. Mouse must have scared itself. He smiled, his whiskers twitching in silent laughter. Third times the charm! Shadowpaw tasted the air. He smelled squirrel. It wasn't his favorite meal, but he was determined to catch something. The rodent was actually quite close. He was surprised it hadn't noticed him. Still crouching, he bunched his haunches. The squirrel turned its back to him and he sprang forth. It didn't even notice him until his jaws were around its body. Victory! He padded back to Bravefeather, satisfied with his catch.
