Today I learned that Evil Spirits are not actually Evil Spirits. Who knew?
What I actually said was that based on culture, translation and mis-translation, context, time period, superstition and religious practices Evil Spirits could mean anything from demons beating down your door to stubbing your toe on the kitchen door. There was a book I read (sparring you unnecessary plot points) a man was re-thatching his roof after it started leaking when he fell off the ladder and cracked his skull open. The villagers all believed that his wife was a witch and had cursed him to die. If you take that and translate it through a couple of different languages taken out of context it could very easily become "the man was attacked by evil spirits set on him by his wife and was killed". Just because it says it was used for warding off evil spirits does not mean that it meant literal ghouls and ghosts. It could just as easily have meant bad luck.
