Name: Half-Face Age: ~35 Sex: Male Breed: Orc Appearance:
A male orc of somewhat standard build, though slightly on the short and slim side. His skin is far paler than normal- white tinged faintly green- and he lacks the pronounced lower tusks of many of his brethren. He is shaven bald. The right side of his face has strong, angular features, with a sharply pointed ear. The left side of his face is mostly burned away: skinless with reddened scar tissue stretched taut over the contours of his skull, studded with patches of bare bone. Exposed fangs stretch back to the jaw. His left eyelid was burned away with everything else, leaving only a bloodshot orb staring from a gnarled socket.
Skills/Abilities:
- Commander: Half-Face has been chief of the Company's pikes for half a decade, and is a natural at putting the iron discipline instilled in the troops by Koloch the Butcher to use on the field. Prowling behind the lines on the back of a warg, Half-Face and his circle of officers are deft hands at maneuvering formations to best effect and maintaining morale and discipline under pressure. Feared and respected by his tuskers, though not much admired or loved, he prefers to stay out of the fray when possible, and he and his underlings often do the legwork of coordinating between the companies while many chiefs and commanders plunge into the thick of it. - Warg rider: Half-Face generally commands from the back of a warg, and is a capable cavalry fighter when necessary, deft with a sword and buckler. - Spymaster: Any decent mercenary only trusts his tuskers so far. Half-Face has a circle of extremely loyal officers, each with a wider net of eyes and ears throughout the Company. If something's brewing, he knows it. Likewise, he tries to keep tabs on whispers in the wider sellsword world and has contacts in surprising places.
Equipment:
- Heavy half plate with chain mail, well made but nothing fancy and little in the way of decoration. Typically does not wear a helmet. - Falchion - Iron-studded buckler, painted crimson - Several daggers.
History:
Born a slave in distant Kafan, Half-Face can't remember his name, if he ever had one. He spent most of his youth a galley-slave on one of the Oligarchy's warships, rowing alongside dwarves, other orcs, and humans of every nationality. Bright, at least for a tusker, he learned some of their tongues and dialects, listened to their tales, and dreamed of his freedom. When he was ten he took part in an unsuccessful mutiny, and as punishment, the captain had the faces of the rebels held to hot coals. Of the mutineers, Half-Face was only one to survive the ordeal, and impressed the captain with his fortitude. Unwisely, he was made a steward on the ship, and thus managed to slip away from his captors at his first opportunity, in the great port city of Octavia. He lived there as an enforcer for a local crime lord for some time, before signing up with the Company after the city was razed in the Five Day War. His ascent in the Company was steady, if undramatic. While a lowly piker, he caught the eye of his superiors as an orc with a quick mind and a chilly disposition, a tusker that didn't need quite as much breaking-in as the tribal recruits. He rose to become an officer in the pikes and then was promoted to the wargs. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Red River Canyon, where his impromptu leadership in an flanking maneuver won the field. The Company Chief offered him command of the wargs, since the previous commander of the cavalry had died in the battle, but Half-Face opted to act as second to the chief of the pikes, an aging orc whose mind was beginning to slip. Half-Face served with competence in the role, building his reputation with the Company's chiefs and forming a circle of officers loyal to him. He stepped into the role of chief three years ago, and his record of command has been solid. He has proven himself a capable leader, making up in ruthlessness, cunning and discipline what he lacks in brilliance, flair or charisma.
Personality and Psychological profile:
Half-Face is somewhat cold blooded, at least for a green skin; pragmatic and cool under pressure. Some tuskers consider him a wily, overcautious coward since he commands from behind the front, and many of the chiefs are suspicious of his ambitions, but recruits quickly learn not to repeat such rumors if they value their tongues...as a disciplinarian Half-Face is second only to Koloch in brutality.
