Name: Grolan Age: 22 Sex: Male Breed: Half Orc, Half Human Appearance: Grolan’s Orcish blood does not run particularly thick, something especially evident in his appearance. With tusks barely prominent enough to be worthy of the name and skin less green but rather tanned and brown he could be mistaken for human in a certain light. Certainly his features are softer than are usual in the Orc, but far courser than a humans, granting him a certain ruggedly handsome appearance to a human. Unfortunately, in Orcish society good looks are not something to boast about, and Grolan’s are already on their way out as his nose was broken early on in the company. Regardless, he remains a striking and not altogether unpleasant figure to look at, with an athletic build and a good six foot two inches of height. His eyes are a striking dark green and he has long flowing black hair tied into a warrior’s knot. Less monstrous than his brethren, but stronger and courser in appearance than any human or Elf, he sits somewhat uncomfortably in the middle of two worlds. Skills/Abilities:
- Please list with most potent skills first. - Gentleman Orc: Somwhat educated in the ways of human nobility, Grolan can function at a surprising level in situations where most Orcs would be completely hopeless. This also provides him with a certain insight into courtly and political intrigue that would be lost on the average mercenary soldier, but not so unimportant to a company’s leader. He could also be considered a rudimentary tactician or commander, with an eye for the bigger picture drilled into him by his father. - Swift with Sword: Favouring the large curved sabre of his homeland, which most closely resembles the Kilij, Grolan is faster than an Orc has any right to be, but with a physical presence that cannot be ignored. - Bladed Buckler: Another trait from his homeland, Grolan is adept at utilizing a bladed buckler strapped to his off-hand, allowing him to grapple while also blocking strikes for him and dealing damage as well. - Clever Fighter: Somewhat reminiscent of the shiftier of Human warriors, Grolan has been known to do away with the more fair aspects of combat, utilizing small thrown weapons such as darts or throwing knives to distract his opponents, or even using dirt or other methods to blind them. - Agile: Grolan is in good physical shape, and rather than the robust physicality of most of his brethren has a body suitable for traversing rough terrain quickly and twisting himself in clever ways, though his comparatively willowy physique works against him in feats of strength. -
Equipment:
- Grolan favours speed over armour, relying on a simple vest of chain-mail painted with red hands, over a padded hauberk and leggings, with iron shin-pads and tough leather boots. He does however allow himself the protection of a decent iron nasal helmet, painted black. In his first year with the company some of the other recruits took his helmet and painted a crude image of a rabbit with an arrow through its neck, an obvious warning to him, he left it there on the forehead of his helmet. - Grolan carries a sword, known as a Kapan but essentially resembling the human Kilij scaled to his size. Crafted from the Eastern steel known for its terrifying hardness, it has lasted far longer than any one weapon should. - Grolan also carries a strapped on bladed buckler, made of bright steel with iron protrusions, if not for the blades and their obvious deadly intent he would have likely been laughed at for carrying such an armament. - Finally Grolan tends to carry a throwing axe, and any number of other sharp throw-able implements, for cheating in combat. -
History:
Grolan was born in the eastern Human Sultanate of Aluim, to the brother of the Sultan himself. His mother was a particularly attractive Orc woman who found herself dragged into the Harem of Emir Ralkan, his father, after her tribe was defeated with finality by the Sultanate. Falling into the subservient role of the Orc woman, she bore little ill will to the Emir, as he had personally fought and defeated her tribe and therefore to be taken as a wife was fair tribute in her mind. It also probably helped that the man was incredibly handsome, and course in a rugged human fashion with a strong will and steely gaze. When Grolan’s mother, Olesh, gave birth to him the Emir surprisingly gave him a fair chance and offered him something of an education, potentially seeing in him a fearsome body-guard, as many of the Orcs from his tribe who had survived had been willingly drafted into the military. Interactions with these Orcs, in fact almost growing up as their mascot, gave Grolan some insight into half of his heritage. However, the Orcs he associated with had swallowed their pride after total defeat, and so they left him unprepared for the wild, tribal, Orcs of the West. However, as he grew into something of a presence and actually defeated the Sultan’s own son (five years his senior) in a sparring session he drew the unwanted attention of the Sultan. Long story short, he survived an attempt on his life, and at the urging of his mother fled the Sultanate for the West. What he found there was hardly to his liking, an Orc with the half-finished education of the nobility and the natural skills of a fighting father and a fighter’s blood. With little else to his name he eventually took to mercenary work, and fell in with the Nar Mat Kordh-Ishi, and being one of the few Orcs that could pronounce the name, let alone understand the irony of it, he didn’t spend too long in the ill-suited Pikes. However, speedy elevation and Human good looks have done Grolan no favours, and in poorly picked fights with his fellow recruits he had his nose broken and a few minor attempts on his life. In dealing with them without the ability to physically overcome his foes, as using a sword is frowned upon in internal disputes, he earned some notoriety. Though he is still mostly known by insulting nicknames. He firmly fits within the Blades, wreaking havoc on the open field with his nimble yet devastating weapon, however he has also been picked upon for more than violence, as some begin to recognise his true potential may lie behind the scenes, rather than at risk of being overpowered by some brute and beaten to death.
Personality and Psychological profile:
Grolan has a sly sense of humour for an Orc and a certain cynicism bred into him from a lifetime of insults. Never finding any particular solace from either of his heritages, he is a man with an iron will and the cruel cunning of a survivor, often hiding behind many faces.
Relationships and Acquaintances:
Perhaps some of the characters know one another, list those acquaintances here. Talk to each other in the OOC about it.
