I don't think the two ideas are mutually exclusive. The Fierce Deity mask represents immeasurable power that is never given any sort of context in the series. Power is what Shadow Link would need to break free, that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be good power. Shadow Link could just as easily use the power of a forgotten hero to rid himself of Ganondorf's influence. As a bonus it would play into his complex of wanting to be better than the hero.

That all of course would depend on where [@JDizzle383] wants to go with the character. Besides the two ideas while both involving Fierce Deity focus on different elements of his power base. Link would be using his powers through the memory link while Shadow Link would be searching for the mask. It could even be that when Shadow Link finally does take up the mask there is some sort of internal war fought within Link and Shadow Link over who controls the power of the Fierce Deity. Just a thought.
