[@AbigailTenshi]To explain the ghoul family thing, the ghoul that would eventually become his father had broken into his familiy's home in order to hide from pursuing CCG. However, the family discovered him and he killed them in panic. This disturbed the sleeping baby upstairs, causing him to cry out. Feeling immeasurable guilt at what he done, as he decided against his better judgement to take the child in as his own as a form of atonement. 

Was this a smart plan, not even close, but Revan's ghoul step-father felt a sense of obligation to the task. The family was comprised of basically just the father and his daughter, who was 7 at the time. If it still doesn't work, then I'm fine with changing it.
