--- People of South Africa, Our union, our nation, is a one of a kind marvel to behold on this grand continent. The civilizations of Europe—Dutch, British, and many others alike—have come together where we stand to create a homeland for all those who wish to carve the raw, untamed lands of Africa into a beacon of blinding light for the other nations of this continent to be guided. Ours is a land without pretense, a land which carves a man down to his soul and his bones, and builds him back up again stronger and wiser than before. Ours is a land where a family can create a life for themselves, and take from what is empty to make themselves a splendour. Hidden riches under dense forest, examples of the finest technology of all civilization tucked between the homes of the strangest and most dangerous of untamed beasts, and marvellous cities, rising up from dust like Adam in the Garden of Eden to make themselves powerhouses of industry and fuel the harvest of the rarest, most spectacular and too the most essential resources the world knows; these are the things that define us. These are the aspects of our nation's character which describe the promise of our future and the glory of our past. Recently, I have heard word from our friends in London that the Parliament there, in a land older but seemingly less worldly wise than ours, has been looking off of the precipice of a cliff and intends to make a decision whether or not to jump. I will assure each and every one of you, the people of the Union of South Africa, that our land will not make such a leap and will not find itself in the jaws of the cannibalistic wolves that await in the pit below. Our own land is not yet truly and fully conquered; by what reasoning shall we send our young men off to die to conquer another man's land, yet alone one already touched by the light of civilization that we endeavour to shine? Regardless of what my esteemed colleague the Right Honourable Viscount Gladstone whispers into my ear, South Africa will have no participation in any war or other armed conflict outside our borders without approval of our own South African Parliament. The winds of change are soon to blow over both the heavens and seas of South Africa, and I will make it my duty and the duty of those aligned with me that our nation's growth and development and the preservation of our fundamental character be the prime duties of this nation's government. The call of South Africa is one of triumph and deliverance. Let that call, and the calls of both Britain and all her dominions, not be drowned by the empty-handed fears of a Briton out of tune with his people, his Parliament, his empire's interest, and international law. Work hard, South Africans, and make yourselves great. -The Right Honourable Louis Botha, Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa.
