When a freighter ship named Voyager, named by its second officer and the Captain's lover, Janeway, that was hauling cargo through the Badlands to Cardassia, was swept away to the Delta quadrant, they ran into a Terran rebel named Chakotay.  After the alien that brought them there, called the Caretaker, died, Voyager's captain, Tuvok, began studying the alien's Array in hopes of using it to expand the Alliance into the Delta Quadrant.  Fearing that the Alliance might acquire the Array's technology, Chakotay fired several tri-cobalt torpedoes at the station, destroying it but losing his vessel and life to Voyager's weapons in the process.  Now, stranded in the Delta Quadrant with dozens of new slaves, the Voyager must make its way back to the Alpha Quadrant.
