Either way, simply put, you get 2 cards, there are five displayed for everyone.  The first 3 that the dealer shows is called the flop, the next is the turn, and the final card is called the river. The object is for each player to make the best 5 card hand between the two cards in their hand, and the five universal cards the dealer dealt.

In order from least to best hands
High card
1 pair
2 pairs
3 of a kind
Full house (3 of a kind and a pair)
Straight (5 cards in order -10, jack, queen, king, ace)
Flush (5 cards of the same suit)
Straight flush
4 of a kind

I may be wrong on the order, but that is essentially the game.
