At a guess from what I've seen while you could build a portal, you wouldn't need to unless you want people to be able to enter your realm whenever they want. It would be easier to either take them yourself, or give them the ability to go there.

Building a portal to another god's realm on the other hand... that would be interesting. Especially if it wasn't especially easy to destroy or close. They'd probably have to set a monster to guard it...
