Also, I'm pretty sure both sides claimed the slaughter was worse than it was! Many crusaders gave accounts just like that, saying how the blood ran in rivers up to their knees and filled the streets. One account claimed there were 60,000 fighting men in the city - double to triple the actual population, and upwards of twenty times the garrison!
