During the years of the Salem witch hunts the Whitby's were cousins to the Proctor's and as such Edgar's family still holds that connection tight. As the years progressed Edgar was beaten over the head with the thoughts that he was to continue a long line of wizardry and it was his responsibility to continue the name of Whitby. During the first year at Salem Edgar was overwhelmed with living in the dormatories, classes and generally delving fully into his wizardly studies and as such he began struggleing academically. When he returned home his father was unreasonably cruel to him, scolding him on his academic failures and forced him to study continuously the entire summer. During those few months Edgar really began to enjoy his studies to the point that he would willingly leave the company of his family to go and study. His second year at Salem was much different from his first. Because of his intense studying during his summer Edgar began to thrive academically. As he found his stride in school he began finding his niche socially and began making friends, although thoughts of his father finding his friends a distracting influence on his school work was always a prominent factor in his mind. As he began progressing in years he always kept his friends at a distance finding true peace buried deep within the pages of his studies.
