Players can play paranormal characters before, during and after the Apocalypse, either knowing full well what's going to happen, trying to prevent or even planning how to survive the aftermath and the event. You would most likely play ex-military/police, master survivalists at worst, or Pagan deities for the closest you could get to over powering characters.
