In response to your questions: I don't see it as necessary to have all of the characters know eacother at the start but it would certainly ease things. Perhaps as compromise have the newer group members be at least familiar with the others, possibly with a prior meeting. I see ooc as being quite important. Things come up that sometimes can't be resolved ic. Its also nice to chat with the others and separate them from their characters. I can usually post daily, typically several times and almost guaranteed in the evenings. I tend to make posts on the shorter side but longer ones certainly aren't out of the question.
