BACKSTORY: Both of Li's parents were lowly beggars. Li was just the bastard child of thieves who barely made ends meet. They lived in the slums of the fire nation where all kinds of prisoners and lowlifes were forced to stay once the prisons were too full. They were heavily taxed by the overbearing leader, and at the time expansion seemed good if only to lessen the pressure of paying their dues. When Li was only 5 they were forced to vacate the small area they called a home, not because they couldn't pay rent but because his parents had gotten caught stealing from the wrong people. As a result they were taken away and Li was forced into an orphanage. Life there was even more rough than before. He was a smaller kid, skinny and frail, and he was almost always picked on. It wasn't until his twelfth birthday his firebending abilities came into fruition, and he finally taught one of his bullies a lesson with a burn to his butt. This caught the eye of the army, and he was soon taken in under the premise that if he worked hard enough, he'd see his parents again. He was forced to torture prisoners in some secret room, and he did work he was not proud of all under that false hope, until he turned sixteen when he demanded to see his parents. His superiors just laughed and told him the harsh fact that they were killed years ago, and if he didn't want to join them, he'd better continue to do his work. On that day he decided he'd make the nation pay for what they'd done and redeem himself for the things he had been forced to do. With his better than average ranking, he was able to escape, and search for a rebel faction.
PERSONALITY: Li is masochistic, and cynical, but he isn't lacking in bravery which gives way into recklessness. He's often scatterbrained and without a plan though. He's not stupid but he wouldn't normally be the brains of any operation. He's kind and compassionate, and takes every promise he makes seriously, trying never to fall through. He's got a soft spot for little kids and animals. Besides the fire nation, the only thing he hates with a passion is himself, for being so gullible for so long.
