Mathias Mortimer grew up in London, his father rarely a presence due to his constant deployment in the British Royal Army. Instilled with a sharp sense of justice since childhood, he joined the London Constabulary at the age of twenty. He served with distinction for three years, reaching the rank of Inspector, before he first came into contact with the dark underworld of the city. Mathias discovered the existence of Vampires chasing after a string of murder cases. He nearly lost his life when he came into contact with the murderer, one of the undead themselves. He only managed to survive due to a string of lucky circumstances, and the experience changed him. He became obsessed, and used his connections as an Inspector to dig up more on their existence. After catching glimpses of the extent of Vampire dominion in London, he quit the force, afraid that he would be caught looking into them. 

From then on he devoted his life to fighting Vampires on his own terms, his ultimate goal to free the city from their dominion. He visited the Americas, France, Germany, and other countries to master tools he could use against his personal war against them. Mathias became a master of sabre-fencing, and proficient in French savate and American pistol-shooting from Colonel Monstery himself. He learned wrestling in Germany, and various baits and traps in the South Americas. As of the last two years he has returned to London and begun fighting Vampires on his own terms.
