[/quote] I'm wondering if a cap of 3 chars would be alright; assuming said player can keep up with them all. That could migitate the loss of one character. From there, I suppose it would be a matter of working out with you beforehand how to best integrate into the story with a new face, especially if a player has one char and that char dies.
