I adore Trump. Politics is just about the only serious interest that I have, and it is probably the most skewed subject out there in so far as how important it is compared to how much people care about it and especially inform themselves about it. Donald Trump makes people interested in politics, and for that, irrespective of his political views or mine, he has my thanks.
The people who are into Trump seem to be people who have been interested in politics for a long time. He seems to be feeding off of the number of dissatisfied Republicans, particularly of the reactionary type. His bread and butter has been, as far as I can tell, baby boomer right-wingers who distanced themselves from Neoconservatives after Bush, and are looking for some charismatic neo-Reagan to restore the concept of conservatism and steal it away from all relatively moderate, uninspiring candidates that keep getting thrown to them. Trump isn't much of a conservative, and definitely not a neo-Reagan, but he can talk a good game and that counts for something when compared to the Romney's and Cruz's of this world. Or are you talking about the knee-jerk reaction that is really common now among everyone else? How he has caused a lot of otherwise politically lethargic people to cringe in horror and pay attention? I doubt that will translate to any long-term political awareness. It's just the spectacle for the year.
