As for anything else - anyone's character is free to have romantic (or lustful) feelings towards whoever else's character of whatever gender they like, as long as the two players are fine with it, and it stays PG-13 in the main thread. Whatever you do in PM's or off-site is up to you, but we don't need to hear about the details. 
Romance sub-plots are always part of the mecha anime genre, and always have been - Amuro Ray and Char Aznable's rivalry in the original Gundam series and it's many sequels was driven over their respective feelings for Lalah Sune, and Macross/Robotech is pretty much driven by love triangles behind all the interstellar war. No reason why this game, which I'm deliberately trying to make similar to anime Real Robot mecha shows, should be any different.
