Probably pretty rarely, but they could also have chucked me off the train in the middle of nowhere. Being able to buy the right ticket it just about the most positive outcome that could have come of being caught.

That's sort of my point, yes. We're a tiny country so we can have shitty trains and it doesn't make that much difference to one's ability to travel around.
