THE RAPE OF NANKING

Overview:

The Rape of Nanking was an episode in the 2nd Sino-Japanese War that saw indiscriminate mass rape and mass killing upon the Chinese inhabitants of the city of Nanking by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Military. The worst of it occurred from December 13, 1937 to the end of January, 1938, in a span of six weeks. The scale of the murder was such that the city's population was reduced by about a third. It ranks among the most heinous war crimes to have been committed in the Second World War because of its scale, its duration and the systematic methods of murder impressed upon the city's inhabitants by the Japanese. The death toll stretched between 50,000 to 300,000 casualties. As a deeply dishonorable and embarrassing act, Japan today denies the fact that the massacre, indeed, happened.

Atrocities committed include:
  • The selective rape of young women, by standing them in line and and choosing the prettiest among them
  • Beheading contests between officers who owned swords
  • Using civilians for target practice
  • And much more!

The Players:

You will be playing as members of the Imperial Japanese Army or IJN ground forces, holding any rank of your choosing from Private to Colonel. You may choose to join in on the massacre or be one of the few Japanese to show mercy and attempt to protect the people of Nanking. Either way is quite fine.

Point Scoring System:

For this RP, there will be a point scoring system. It is a simple one: the GM will read your act of evil or mercy and give you points based on the action's extent. So, the more heinous, the better; the kinder, the better. Points gained will be mentioned in every GM post. When the in-RP date reaches January 31, 1938 and the atrocities have more or less calmed down, the RP will end and the GM will evaluate the karma of all participating players, giving each one of them an epilogue of their fate after the events of the RP.

Doing something of great import or consequence will of course reap lots of negative or positive karma, especially if you are an officer. When you reach a threshold for nastiness, the Far East Tribunal, after World War II, will probably try to hunt you down in your epilogue. Or, they might not, hoping not to tarnish post-war relations with Japan overmuch with the emergence of the Cold War.

Writing Style:

Please keep your posts tasteful as much as possible even though we are writing about mass rape and murder. Try to substitute blunt, common words for much more flowery literary ones. Simply put, do your best not to be vulgar.

It is encouraged that players operate in the same unit for maximum synergy.

Long, collaborative posts by and between players are also encouraged.

You have absolute narrative control over NPC's where it is reasonable. So you do not have to wait for the GM to respond when you are beating a man to death and you are asking him why's he hitting himself.

I will make the OOC when enough interest has gathered. Be sure to sharpen your katanas well till then!

There's something rather horrifying about seeing an RPG where one can play as IJA soldiers who killed family and family friends.

I've only been here for a few short days, so my opinion probably has no real weight here, but this is kind of...wrong.
I roleplay for enjoyment, and there's nothing enjoyable about roleplaying an actual atrocity that really happened, even as a pacifist observer.
I'm sure there were some merciful Nazi's during WWII, but I'm not going to make a roleplay where you can play as a guard at Auschwitz. And I'm definitely not going to grade the players on their acts of cruelty.

I'm sorry but this idea just comes off as insensitive, if not immoral.

@Crimmy@Plank Sinatra

So I take it you fellows are interested?

@Yuritopia

I do understand that this RP is not for everyone. There is still great fun to be had, however.

I'm pretty sure that was what Mukai and Noda thought too.

That's why they were executed for war crimes.

I don't fucking understand why you would make an RPG based on the Nanjing Massacre.

What the actual fuck?

"Sharpen our katanas well"?

Are you fucking batshit insane?

"substitute blunt, common words for much more flowery literary ones"?

Oh, do you want us to "ruthlessly debase the maidenhoods of young Orientals" or some fucking bullshit?

What the fuck is with this pseudo-glorification of Imperial Japan's wartime atrocities? Why the fuck would you even do this shit? I knew people who died there, you sociopathic son of a bitch!

Frankly, I could not be more repulsed by this if I tried. I have spent several minutes thinking of anything that could possibly be worse to see in an RPG format, and I haven't come up with anything. I had to discuss with an actual Chinese friend of mine, who is indescribably pissed off, if there was anything that could possibly be worse.

Turns out, there is. It's also from Imperial Japan.

I would not be more offended if you had made an RPG about Auschwitz than I am by this game, and my family is German.

I mean this with exactly as much respect as is deserved when I say that for trivializing, no, gamifying, this event you are an example of some of the worst society has to offer. I don't know if you're ignorant or intentionally offensive, and frankly, I don't care.

Learn to have some fucking respect.

EDIT: Honestly, @Crimmy beat me to it. And he has every right to be pissed off.

Well I was trying to be nice, as I'm still new here, but since everyone else has expressed their feelings without holding back, I will do the same: You're a worse person than Makoto Itou.

However, I wonder if there's anyone out there who would like to see this ball rolling?

There's bad taste, there's poor taste.

And then there's this.

Honestly, I'm not sure you could do worse then this in the taste department. There are lines.

And you just tap-danced over them while singing the praises of one of the most morally bankrupt organizations to exist in recent memory.

Guys, c'mon, it's just a collaborative narrative writing exercise.

Also, have you not considered what it would be like to be the dragon as opposed to the knight?

Cold.

I approve.

What I don't approve of is this rp concept and if I had the power I would erase it from this forum with extreme prejudice.

I absolutely fail to fathom why anyone would think this a good idea. Not for a laugh, not for a rise, not even for being a freaking asshole.

The only explanation I can come to is that you're an idiot who doesn't understand basic human conduct.

I mean I could make a game about 9/11 and getting points for planes crashed and that still might not be as disrespectful and horrendous as this mess.

That's a major problem, and frankly leaves me quite disturbed and disgusted.

Is it really so hard for you to conduct yourself like a human being and not a psychotic monster?

What possible good could come out of this? Like, I could almost understand if this were a well thought out piece of commentary or satire (which would require a great deal more care than using a scoring system to encourage players to write out atrocities what the fuck ) intended to critique, say, modern Japan's issues with refusing to admit to all the shit they did when they caught the Imperialism fever, but even that would be a huge stretch. It would undergo a lot of scrutiny, and rightfully so.

Using war crimes for titillation and #2edgy4u is abhorrent.

Cut the trolling bullshit.

I'll keep taking the fucking bait until the very end, but that's because I refuse to see the IJA's atrocities turned into a fucking cheap murderboner simulator. Because that's all this fucking is. A chance to trivialise a massacre that is still within fresh memory while rubbing out your sick, debased urges.

Yeah but the difference is that the Dragon is a fictional being. It never really existed. It never really murdered, raped, tortured and beheaded real people, you fucking sociopath.

I don't offend easily, living half my life in a wheelchair has made me pretty thick skinned. But your baffling inability to see what is so basically and morally wrong about this idea is just pure offensive. Not just to me, but basic humanity.

Either you're a troll. Or you legitimately believe that this is a good idea, meaning you're a soulless monster. Not unlike the psychopaths who committed the atrocity you are trying to turn into a game.
