[/quote]This guy is actually working/worked for certain Star Trek EU works, he also made this ship which is apparently designed for a post-Voyager era where the Federation adopted Slipstream Drive tech for new FTL.

I consider using something like these but ring-shaped Fold Stabilizers are more common for civilian ships because they introduce a rather obvious point of vulnerability.
