I had the inkling that Marci and Lynn would be killed by racist Gertrud in the dark of night with an AK-47 and that's why their rooms shared a balcony, so she could take out both in one night and formulate some lie about why they "haven't left their rooms" the next morning.

The remnants of Nazism only occurred to me much later (when reading. Cue me totally forgetting we were in Germany), which further justified her hatred.
