Yeah, I'm going to say that they can wander off, but as their job is pretty much to protect and care for their charge, there'd have to be a reason for them to leave for any amount of time.

Regarding how they appear, it was briefly discussed in the last thread, so I'll get it down here.

Basically, the guardian can choose to appear as either their true form or as their butterfly form to other guardians and soul-bound humans. To normal humans, however, they'll always appear as simply a butterfly. 

In terms of how they can interact with the world, they're pretty much ghosts that can decide whether they are tangible or not at any given moment. So if they choose to, they can pass through walls, or they can make themselves solid and interact with the real world around them.

I'm not sure if they'd necessarily be stronger around their human, but being close to their human means they can soul-link at any time, which [i]would[/i] make them stronger than your average wandering spirit.
