THEYRE USING CLIVERFIELD FOR MAKERTIBG THEYRENUSING CLIVERIFELD FOR MARKETING

Damn them to hell for using the Cloverfield name strictly for marketing purposes.

Jk.

It's fucking rad, man. IT'S FUCKING RAD.

So these people were making a movie about people in a bunker because of some sort of disaster on the outside.

You know what's cooler than a random movie about some random nukes or whatever outside of a bunker?

A movie about people in a bunker BECAUSE ALIENS ARE OUTSIDE

ALIENS FROM THAT OTHER MOVIE

THE THREAT... IS FROM THAT OTHER MOVIE.

Isn't that cool? I think it is. It make both movies larger. It's an "oh shit" moment that had TWO movies worth of build up. (Kinda)

The sudden movie with the sudden Cloverfield ending was perfect. There wasn't any time to get bored of the wierd "sequel."

We have so much expectations for sequels in general, and it was a good thing to have those expectations turned sideways.

I don't know how well I can explain it, but whatever unique thing was going on in this movie -- I loved it.

Remove your pessimism about marketing and corporate greed for a moment. Just think of it as a very well executed crossover.

It's a crossover between this cool movie, that hasn't had a chance to become well known or iconic yet, and Cloverfield.

Yeah.

Actually it's not. I loved the movie, and I loved Cloverfield, so I looked up the continuity -- they're totally different universes. The reason for the crossover title is, it's got a similar 'vibe' with Cloverfield -- in that it's a big-scary-monster movie that's really not about the monster, not even remotely.

My take -- the first portion is like a combination of Signs (Shayamalan) and Ex Machina. Character-driven, psychological thriller, indie/small-budget cleverness and fucking incredible writing. Well directed, well shot.... fucking brilliant.

The magic in this movie is.... well, there's a lot. Every single thing worked. Acting was on point, directing was on point, writing was beyond on point, etc. The hitch is, it legitimately feels like two different movies hacksawed at the 1:45 mark and sewn back together on the wrong body. Somewhere out there, there's an alien-invasion movie that ends with half an hour of family-style dining and board games. But I'll tell you what -- drawing it up that way took balls, and I think it works. More or less. It really didn't need the Cloverfield tag, but there it is, and yeah, I guess it's got the similar vibe thing going on.... but it's confusing, and probably more than a little bit of cash-grab. BUT HEY -- this is the Avengers era. If we're gonna have a movie 'series' that's linked by thematic elements instead of strict chronology and continuity, you know what, more power to you, JJ Abrams. I'll get behind that 100%.

I saw it a couple weeks ago. I didn't really sleep that night.

I snuck a bowl of fruit (shut up) into the theater and had it on my lap.

Those fucking jump scares deprived me of half my fruit ;_;

But yeah overall, fucking rad movie, amazing acting, excellent filmography. 10/10 would lose sleep again.

I don't know if I believe that.

I liked the boldness of it.

>Is there aliens?
>Is it just some slight reference to Aliens?

NOPE. HERE THEY ARE. YEP, WHOLE WORLD IS FUCKED. AHH, WATCH OUT!

I like the idea of it more than I care about the tonal shift.

And I'm chalking up most complaints as little more than people being upset at something outside of their expectations.

Similar thing happened with Hateful 8 tbqh

Thought it was mildly entertaining at first, despite the cringey dialogue in the beginning. But between the shower curtain suit and Molotov cocktail bomb it was just silly. 4.5/10

I saw it twice.

I went in thinking that even though it was going to be a crappy movie, I'll enjoy it anyways but I was absolutely hooked.

Instant favorite and finally something original.

I thought I read something about JJ Abrams wanting to create a large world, about the same alien invasion, but following different people's stories in different movies. John Goodman's character, I think, said something about the attack coming in waves. In the beginning of the first Cloverfield movie, you saw something being shot from the sky into the water. That was the first wave.

And I guess the whole race is biomechanical.

Personally I didn't really care for the movie. I mean it was well written, very well acted, and John Goodman was adequately terrifying like I knew he would be, but I just don't think it's a story I relate to or really care about at all (went and saw it because I was dragged along). The alien wrap-up at the end felt EXTREMELY rushed. Especially the part where that girl apparently throws a molotov cocktail like 50 feet straight into the air into the alien/ship's opening, and the whole thing explodes. From a molotov cocktail. Seems like a stretch.

I'm not going to say that they just used the Cloverfield name for marketing, but it does seem like it was a separately conceived idea that was later incorporated into the Cloverfield universe for a "what-if" sort of appeal. The movie lacked something all the way through, that gripping element that brings YOU into the story to relate with and care about the characters (they tried REALLY HARD with that breakup angle but then they didn't go anywhere with it), and the alien invasion story was meant to fill that void.

It didn't for me, it was much too forced, but I'm glad other people liked it.
