If they killed mother, we would have to kill them."[/i]  That's just the way things worked, wasn't it?  If someone hurts you, hurt them back.  It's the only way to survive in the gutter.  Sure, they'd probably try and hurt her back, but that's just how things were.  She wasn't [i]born[/i] with her scars, after all...
