Yeah, that could be a reason why you like sci-fi. I don't have any interest in technology or science or space but I love fiction that's so completely out of this realm you can do whatever you want with it.

I'm calling it: he probably doesn't like his powers because he's hurt somebody he cares with it because before he had anger issues and when he burst his powers activated and probably hurt them and he's been regretful ever since and wants to find a way to reign his anger so it doesn't happen again and sees his power as a curse. Bonus: he was probably a drunk before too.
