Into the Marble
All one needs to do in order to graduate from Geneeva's Meister and Weapon Training Academy is to bring in one hundred cured souls. Simple enough, no? That's because when it's said easily among first year, one star class students, it sounds just that easy. But those in second and third star classes know it's a far more difficult task. Monsters are a'plenty in this world and finding them is only the first step in the journey. Curing a creature requires a clean kill straight to the heart or brain, depending on the creature. Killing a creature any other way ends in a tainted soul, worth gold to Geneeva's guards who deliver them to the nation's ruler, but useless to students who hope to graduate from the academy. They simply don't count as part of the one hundred.
Souls are gathered in teams, shipped off into large areas that are crawling with the types of creatures they are looking to kill. Teams are arranged with this in mind solely, not rank, age, sex or skill. Meisters and Weapons are thrust into a kill-or-be-killed world. Stealing another Meister/Weapon's acquired soul is punishable by ejection from the Academy or demotion of rank. Their mission is to get a soul and find the exit at which point they will be teleported back to the Academy and given a chance to relax until their next hunt. It is important to remember that all students will face the same creature for the one hundredth soul, though will face it alone with their Weapon/s.
Geneeva doubles as living quarters for almost all of its students along with their families. However living in Geneeva does come at a cost. Do well in your battles, gather enough souls and you will be just fine. Tainted souls are worth gold because they are still souls of evil magical creatures and can be transformed into a variety of materials that are actually useful to Geneeva's residents. With this in mind, many students hunt just to remain in the Academy while they work on gathering cured souls and their academics. It helps them hone their skills but isn't absolutely necessary if an individual is looking to graduate the Academy in their first year. This has happened only twice however, these people being prodigies, one of them living in the Academy and teaching, the other having left to the outside world as soon as they graduated.
SUMMARY;
Your character is now enrolled in Geneeva's MWTA or is somehow tied to it. How they've gotten into this position is up to you. Maybe they always knew they were a Meister, maybe they followed a best friend and realized their own abilities, maybe they had a vision, maybe they teach there, maybe they have a mission to take the whole thing down from the inside out, etc. GMWTA is in a magical society and a magical world, so hiding it is unnecessary, though there is a protective barrier around it. It serves as both a home to students and non-students- as long as you can pay, you can stay. Your current main objective (as a student)- collect one hundred cured souls without dying and failing out of class.
