Every action has a reaction, and not the ones players want. It's all a game of chance and there was just as much a possibility of those grenades taking out the whole nest as bringing the caves down. Unfortunately for them it was the ladder. You can gamble further to fight your way out and finish the mission by force, low chance as it is, or fall back and live to fight another day. Note that if the team splits the decision there is no consequence for abandoning the rest of the team that wants to fight.
