Basically your mage doesn't have to be a guy with a long beard who reads books and wields a staff. You could have a powerful martial artist who channels magic to give him superhuman strength and speed, or you could have a hunter who lives in the wilderness and uses magic to gain to senses and abilities of animals to survive. Your character can be of any background as long as it isn't too insane like he's the ruler of the entire planet.
