I was initially going to make an underworld merchant type, but the computer crashed and I had to go to work. When I came home, someone already made a merchant character. Sad face.
Don't fret about what others are doing, if you have an idea for a character, feel free to write it up! I'd rather people make characters they want to play rather than trying to fit an arbitrary role; it's a lot easier to feel invested in an idea if you weren't forced to do something that wasn't your idea choice. Plus, depending how many sheets we get submitted, some are going to be regrettably turned down and likely put into a roster to call upon if people drop out. It's entirely possible one, both, or neither of the merchant characters will make the initial selection. I don't want to sound doom and gloom or imply that you're wasting your time, because even people I know and played before are going into this with a clean slate without preferential treatment or prejudice. Best thing anyone can do is make sure the quality's top notch, and even if people don't make the initial selection, I will contact them (if they choose) as soon as a slot opens up. My last RP, which is still ongoing, had a problem where I wanted to see how manageable it would be to accept everyone's sheets, which were all pretty darn good, and ended up having to try to manage the clusterfuck of 16 characters. I'd rather avoid that again, because these games do not lend themselves well to huge numbers of characters. >_>
