I think the character is just fine. Honestly the whole discussion of good and evil with a necromancer made me think of a great example. Diablo the game has a faction of necromancers with a neutral stance in the world. They seek to balance life and death and borrow the help of those beyond the grave for assistance.

There's plenty of evil examples.
