What material do we use, how good is a weapon typically used?

Can our guns instantly annihilate an enemy ship, or can our materials withstand even a supernova? Cause Type 3 is cool and all, but staying within confirmed science, and as such excluding Type 4 and 5 civs, there is technicall an unlimited amount of things that we could have, and you even said teh the description that everyone has roughly the same tech.
