[@The Survivor] electromagnetic rails (rail guns) have no recoil because the acceleration is purely due to magnetic acceleration.

A.I would be handled by technicians, which could fall under the purview of Engineering yes, the actual programming side would largely be the scientists who knew fully what they were doing. Though yes Engineering also includes propulsion, energy generation, hyperspace engine, jump drive, shields etc.

An important thing to note is that engineering will be enlisted (military) personnel, even if they weren't prior to being chosen.
