Almost as if our relationship, and familial ties, are deeper and more meaningful than a last name. I agree with you for the most part, but I do think you're underselling the importance of imperial culture, in the face of basic politics and law. I think our culture is a bit more nuanced than that, and we don't just celebrate the queen on a purely obligatory and functionalistic level.
