[/quote] And even the nuclear war technically wouldn't do nearly as much long-term damage, though for the sake of a setting such as this it would need to be stretched to include the collapse of a central government. And under these circumstances the pressures that society would face would have less to do with nuclear weapons and more the matter of loosing the centralization and modern trade networks required to keep the modern world up. We'd end up loosing a lot more in infrastructure that'll cause more deaths than the bombs would have. The radiation itself would have easily waned away as the many isotopes released as waste decay (within the first few months of an explosion to a year).
