Yew can switch between them between combat. Here's a list of em all and a basic run-down:
Freelancer: Default, isnt really an asterisk. Is okay at anything. Monk: High damaging physical attacks to single targets, with a cost. Prefers Knuckles or Staves. White Mage: Healer, some support, some offensive spells. Prefers staves. Black Mage: Exploits elemental weaknesses and deal large magical damage. Prefers Rods. Knight: Okay offense, good defense. Prefers Sword+Shield. Theif: High speed, steals from opponents. Prefers daggers. Merchant: Abilities use and earn pg (currency). Prefers Spears or Staves. Time Mage: Support/offense mage. Prefers Staves. Ranger: Target specific "types" of enemies to deal more damage. Prefers Bows. Summoner: Uses powerful Summons to deal great offensive magic, with high cost. Prefers Rods. Valkerie: Powerful, BP-consuming attacks on all enemies. Prefers Spears. (Note: BP is complicated. I'll explain later what it is.) Red Mage: Low to mid level Black and White magics. Prefers Swords. Peformer: Song&Dance to buff allies and distribute BP. Prefers Daggers or Rods. Pirate: High-MP consuming physical attacks that enfeeble as well. (MP is akin to Mana.) Prefers Axes. Ninja: Evade & Counterattack. Prefers Daggers. Swordmaster: Tank hits to deal POWERFUL counterattacks. Prefers Katana. Templar: High BP-consuming support and offensive abilities. Prefers Greatsword. Dark Knight: Consumes HP to deal dark-elemental damage. Prefers Sword. Wizard: Consume extra BP to modify spells. Prefers Rods. Charioteer: Triple or Quad-weild weapons and attack to gain proficiency. Good with any weapons. Fencer: Enter different stances to augment stats. Prefers Swords. Bishop: Percentage based healing and support. Prevers Staves. Astrologian: Elemental support and buffing spells. Prefers Rods. Catmancer: Learns abilities from enemies. Prefers Knuckles or Axes. Hawkeye: Physical damage to multiple enemies. Prefers Firearms. Patissier: Pro at inflicting statuses and enfeebling. Prefers Daggers. Guardian: Tank hits to charge Soul Power, and unleash attacks consuming it. Prefers Spears. Kaiser: Uses powerful abilities that affect friend and foe alike. Prefers Greatswords. Yokai: Summon 7 deadly demons to use powerful abilities. Prefers Katana or Rods.
Also, Yew can Brave and Default. Braving means he can take another action in quick succession by sacrificing 1 BP per extra action. Defaulting stores up BP, and reduces damage taken that turn. Some abilties cost extra BP by nature, and do not include braves. For instance, lets say you brave once, meaning you take 2 actions. One action costs MP, and the other costs one BP. You would then have lost 3 BP, despite taking only 2 actions. Also, a maximum of 3 BP can be stored, and you cannot go below negative 4 BP. BP regenerates each turn on its own. Lastly, actions cannot be taken while the user has negative BP. If i were at -4 BP, i would be spending 4 turns doing nothing until my BP gets to 0. You are a sitting duck with negative BP. (The user can, however, take actions while they have 0 BP) Another example: I am at 0 BP. I take 1 action, and am at -1 BP. Next turn, i gain 1 BP because that's how it works. I hope this explanation makes sense. Backstory: Yew was one of the crystalguard's 3 cavaliers, and went to save Pope Anges after she'd gotton kidnapped by the Glanz Empire. After being betrayed by fellow cavaliers, Janne and Nikolai, Yew journeyed on his own, until he met Edea, Magnolia and Tiz, who all accompanied him on his adventure. They ventured cross all the continents, thwarting the empire's lieutenants, but never rescuing the Pope. They then learned of the Kaiser's (leader of the empire) plans to go back in time and reshape the world to not have corruption. THey failed, and the world was plunged into ????, before deus ex machina, and the four go back in time to the first fight Yew had with the Kaiser, before the pope got kidnapped. They convinced the Kaiser to join them and fight for change in the now, but another plot twist, and the Kaiser instead went forward in time, taking a huge threat to the world with him, to ensure it didnt hurt anyone. Yew and company managed to thwart the evil god Providence, the one who created the threat. I cut out TONS of plot elements there, just FYI.
