A bit of parental pushing on the side of the significant other, perhaps? A conversation of "Mother, father, I'm seeing a Carrington, yes THOSE Carrington's, may I spend time mingling with their family instead of whatever it is you planned on having us do during this break period?" I'd be willing to hash some things out to see if it can work out.
